Meeting The Band Background

During the first 24 hours that Brandon Hendrix and I worked as videographers for Andrew W.K. in April 2002, we rolled tape on nearly every waking moment. A month later, I edited that footage into a 50-minute documentary called Meeting the Band, which told the whole story of how we went from fans in the crowd one night, to employees of the band the next. Its a rather unique tale, and I wanted to preserve it for myself and the bands benefit. As time went by, however, people began expressing interest in seeing the story unfold for themselves. So I put it on DVD, made a crappy slimline CD-style cover, and handed a few out. The reviews were surprisingly very positive, but until now, the film has never seen a decent DVD release.

When we began shooting video for the band, it was understood that the footage would end up in the bands possession, and an official DVD would be released in the near future by Island Records. After it was all over in 2003, the bands management tried striking the DVD deal several times, but every time negotiations started to get off the ground, they soon stalled. Two years later, with still only rumors of an upcoming DVD release for the band in the future, I finally decided to give all of this great footage to the fans that wanted it.

I am not doing this to make any money off of the footage I shot for Andrew W.K. and the band; this DVD represents a years worth of my life’s work, and I want to know that my contributions mattered. My aim is merely to give the fans what they have wanted for three years, and I encourage everyone to share this footage freely with each other. There are several sites out there such as AndrewWKMusic.com that exist for this very purpose, and Andrew himself encourages the distribution of live recordings, rare tracks, and video of his work among fans as long as its not for a bootleg profit. Please get a copy of this DVD for yourself, and burn copies for everyone you know who is interested in Andrew W.K..

Featuring exclusive concert footage, backstage access, interviews, candid moments with the band, and much more, Meeting the Band is an incredible experience for the Andrew W.K. fans. I only wish that I had made all of this available much sooner! Please get one and share it freely with everyone who enjoys the music and mystique of A.W.K., and e-mail me Brandon Mullis with any questions or comments you may have. I look forward to hearing any reactions from you! You can also email awkmusic@gmail.com for questions.

About The Film

Meeting the Band was shot on Hi8 and 8mm video, and was edited before I had DV/firewire capabilities. This doesn’t make for bad video quality, but it’s not up to the standards of the rest of the discs features, or anything I’ve filmed since. The reason such low-quality cameras were used is simple: we had no idea we were going to be asked by a nationally touring band to come along and film some shows for them, so I had yet to upgrade my equipment. Everything after this date, however, was shot in high-resolution MiniDV and Digital 8.

That’s not to say that the film itself suffers because of the video quality; it actually works in favor of the overall effect. It has a gritty, low-profile street feel to it as a result, and you feel like you’re literally part of the action hanging out with the band in a parking lot after a show, rather than watching a slick, overproduced presentation that separates you from the action. Im proud of the film, and if I could go back and change how I shot it, I don’t know that I would.

That being said, you still may not like the film, and there’s nothing wrong with that. To each his own. But it is what it is, a comprehensive document of 24 hours spent on the road with A.W.K. right as the ball got rolling.

Meeting The Band DVD Special Features

The movie is just one part of this disc, and to be honest with you, it might not even be the best part! I spent a full week this past August editing together a great lineup of special features for the DVD, and on this page you’ll find the details of every last one of them.

Tour Til You Puke

Probably the show-stealer of the DVD, Tour Til You Puke is a behind-the-scenes look at the I Get Wet Tour. Included are segments from several live performances, including an inside look at the Motherfucker Party (see below) and Dee Snider’s Radio 104 Fest in Hartford, CT. The band meets and signs autographs for the fans at several venues, and our cameras follow guitarist Jimmy Coup as he gets progressively drunker and drunker in Athens, GA. On a more somber note, you’ll also witness I Love NYC and Andrews tribute speech live on the one-year anniversary of September 11, 2001. The topper is a 3-minute music video montage of some of the greatest moments of 2002, with both video and still shots from the entire tour.

I Love NYC Live at the Motherfucker Party

On May 26, 2002, Andrew W.K. performed at the Motherfucker Partys two-year anniversary at the Roxy in New York City, and you’ll get a fitting rendition of I Love NYC from this event in its entirety. This footage has never been seen before now!

Radio 104 Fest Highlights

Directly following the Motherfucker Party, Andrew W.K. went to Hartford, CT and rocked Radio 104 Fest 02 with 20,000 strong in attendance! You’ll see a highlight montage of the entire intense performance, set to the song We Want Fun as well as an inside look backstage at the event!

Ozzfest 2002 Highlights

Much like the Radio 104 Fest highlight reel, this montage is a closeup look from the front lines of Ozzfest 2002! You’ll see all of the most explosive moments from A.W.K.s all-too-brief set, edited into a music video of Its Time to Party.

This is all in addition to the 50-minute feature Meeting the Band, so in total you’re getting one hour and twenty minutes of Andrew W.K. insanity on this DVD. Please burn and share it freely with other fans, and above all, pass the word along!

A Message to the Andrew W.K. Fans

If there is anyone out there who attended any of A.W.K.s live events in 2002, this disc will be especially of value to you. The dates shown in the film and the featurettes specifically are as follows:

  • April 22, 2002 Charlotte, NC (Tremont Music Hall)
  • April 23, 2002 Atlanta, GA (The Cotton Club)
  • May 26, 2002 New York, NY (The Motherfucker Party @ The Roxy)
  • May 27, 2002 Hartford, CT (Radio 104 Fest)
  • July 28, 2002 Atlanta, GA (Ozzfest @ Hifi Buys Amphitheater)
  • September 11, 2002 Athens, GA (The 40 Watt Club)
  • September 12, 2002 Columbia, SC (New Brookland Tavern)

If you were at any of these events, please get in touch with me and I’ll send a disc out to you immediately. Not only are the live shows represented on the DVD, but you may very well be included in shots hanging out with the band, getting an autograph, or addressing our cameras directly. (This is especially true with the Cotton Club, Radio 104 Fest, and 40 Watt Club shows footage of those events is abundant on the DVD.)

Regardless of whether you were at any of these events or not, you will love the disc as a fan of Andrew W.K., without a doubt. I wanted to piece this project together out of my love for the music, and because I know that as a fan, I have wanted something like this to be available for a very long time I am sure you have, as well. Please contact me for your copy, and be sure to spread the word!

Day 13: Who Knows? Japanese Limited Edition

  • Post category:News

Serious and major props to Joefrederick for this! This version has an extra 45 minute long concert from Taiwan on it +more! Not only does this include the archived DVD files but also Hi-Res scans of the art! Just burn the DVD files using your favorite DVD burning software, no need to re-author anything! To retrieve this DVD it will be a little different then our normal archived materials. It will take some minor how-to knowledge using torrents, this is due to its massive size of 4gb big. You’ll need a program such as Utorrent.

Once you’ve completely finished this torrent PLEASE, PLEASE seed the file as long as you possible can. Meaning, you leave your computer on and the Utorrent program running while people retrieve the file from YOU. Please especially do this if people are still leeching it from you (you’ll know what I mean once you see it in Utorrent).

For those who just really really really dont get how to use torrents contact me and we’ll work something else out.

I realize the use of torrents might be a little more involved then the average user might be use to so please contact me at awkmusic@gmail.com for any questions

Enjoy!

Day 12: A Bunch of Random Stuff Archived

  • Post category:News

Mostly random stuff today. You may already have it, but it hasn’t been properly put up on this site yet. My Destiny is a song that was supposedly written when Andrew was 17 but it doesn’t sound anything like the stuff he was recording back then. Its recording sounds much more recent, like a B-side from the Mother of Mankind album. You’ll be able to find it permanently in the B-Sides section. Never Let Down (Live Sessions @ AOL) is another track that will permanently be placed in the B-Side section, it comes from readytodie. He posted it at his most excellent site awkmedia.com. Party (You Shout) is obviously from the Premium Collections and more specifically The Very Best So Far as a bonus track. I’m just making sure everybody’s heard it! And I apologize for this next track, there was an MP3 of the Steev Mike Radio Ad (also in B-side section) that was only 1 minute long. That mp3 floated around for sometime, well for the full track which is 2:35 long, it has been properly archived Steev Mike Radio Commercial! I highly, highly recommend getting this track, its very peculiar. I can’t remember if I’ve put this up already or not as a news post but I know it wasnt in the B-side section for some reason, but now it is! Don’t Stop Living On The Edge a cover by Good Clean Fun.

This gem came awhile back: 2010-Andrew WK & Matt Sweeney Jam Session. I don’t really know what section of the site to put it in yet I’m still deciding. But it will eventually be put somewhere permanently other than this news post. Artists Against Apartheid is another noise album, it’s a band/album release Andrew was a part of back in the day. Honestly I don’t know much about it. It was initially on awkshare.com, it’s just one long 20 minute track. ENJOY FOR TODAY!

Day 11: Tons of Stuff!

  • Post category:News

Mr. Velocity Hopkins

Honestly, my agenda is to get content up on the site AS SOON as I get it. In other words everything I have, you have! However, there are exceptions to this when different sources don’t want certain things shared then I wont post it (*sorry*), luckily that doesn’t happen too often. This past summer I worked a lot and didn’t get a lot of time to update the site. So I’ve kinda been stockpiling some stuff and also waiting for the go-ahead on some stuff, that’s the reason for these mass content updates. It’s looking like I better just start throwing up stuff if I ever want to finish what I’m able to share with YOU! Hence, this post.

On an unrelated note you can pretty much call this post a readytodie exclusive. Since everything came from him! Seriously thanks so much for such awesome info and content man! He’s also been updating lots of the related bands section so if you want some clarification on Andrews past, check it out! And if you have questions about it he is pretty much the expert on the subject so if anybody knows, it’s him. You can contact him at the official forums. Some great stuff here: Mr. Velocity Hopkins S/T album. 2 rare concerts: 2006-06-01-Apple Store Shibuya, Japan & 2006-08-03-Summer Sonic 06′ Japan. The apple store is a solo show and the Summer Sonic 2006 show is from the Close Calls With Brick Walls Tour so it’s pretty unique! Our Concert section is now completely up to date! Pending we dont get more submissions.

Look forward to an alternate version of the song Pushing Drugs, an hour+ long documentary about Andrew from 2002, the Who Knows Japanese DVD, AND the mysterious Fun Night Single exists and has been found!! +MORE???

****Be the first to get ‘em through our Email and RSS Feed subscriptions!****

Day 10: Canadian Concerts

  • Post category:News

2 Concerts from Canada today; 2002-10-10-Barrymores-Ottawa,ON and 2002-10-11-The Docks-Toronto,ON.

To those that might be thinking “is this 2 weeks of stuff only going to be old crappy concerts and old obscure releases of bands he was in?” than you would be wrong. We have a few special surprises up our sleeves. Also it’s looking like the content is going to last past the 2 week threshold. Prepare yourself for never released content! And subscribe to news alerts via Email or RSS!!!

Gregg Roberts

Also an update on the AWK Band Interviews. We’re 1/2 way done with Sgt. Franks interview and it should be finished up sometime this week. ALSO Gregg Roberts will be interviewed Thursday night. So get your questions in to him before then, email them to me at awkmusic@gmail.com.

Day: 9 The Hercules!!!!

  • Post category:News

This cassette came out on Hanson records in 1996. Andrew played drums for this one release. It’s a noise album, so again beware if you’re not into noise music. But still cool to have! Thanks to Readytodie for this!!!

The Hercules S/T

Since it’s looking like well have plenty of content to fill these two weeks, I’m throwing in a bonus track that can also be found in the B-sides section. It’s the Star-Spangled Banner that Andrew plays in the Beast People DVD. ENJOY! And tell your friends! Again, thanks to Readytodie. In fact you can thank readytodie for MUCH of the content on this site!!!!

Day 6: Music Band! + Live Concert! = Party!

  • Post category:News

This vinyl rip is a compilation of noise bands, one of which is a band Andrew W.K. was in called Music Band with the particular track being Dirt Lifter. It was a split of two record labels called 7 Songs For The Youth of Today Come To Blackjack Country. The split being Bulb Records and Blackjack Country. Also Andrew might have appeared on the track uhh by Mr. and Mrs. Velocity Hopkins. A word of caution, this record is a noise album so unless you’re into that sort of thing it may not be for you! Since this release only has one or maybe two Andrew tracks we’re throwing you 2002-06-11-Graceland-Seattle, WA!!! A concert that originally appeared on the website AWKshare.com but hasn’t been widely available in four years when share shut down. So check it out!
