The show, hosted by skating legend Tony Hawk, honored the best in sports over the past year – but certainly wasn’t your typical awards ceremony.   Featuring performance by Travie McCoy and Far East Movement, the show honored Dwight Howard with the “All-Pro Class Clown” award; Ryan Sheckler with the “Alti-Dude” award; the NY Yankees & the Boston Red Sox with the “Best Foes Forever” award and many others.   Kobe Bryant was accepted a special honor – KING OF THE COURT award, which was presented by George Lopez.

BREAKING NEWS! We now have album art and a name to Andrew’s brand new EP, “Party All Goddamn Night”. It ships March 30th 2011 in Japan. A release date in America is still unconfirmed. A full length album is expected later this year.

Thoughts:

If the expected rumors of an American release are true than it should bring many unique qualities to this release. Yes, it’s true we’ve enjoyed many additional releases of AWK music since “The Wolf” way back in 2003, but each release seems to have had some type of “condition” (annoyingly I might add) attached to it… especially to us Americans. Sadly, this is probably due to Andrew’s various legal troubles he’s dealt with throughout his career. To recap here is some of the history behind Andrew W.K.’s discography.

Andrew’s 3rd studio album “Close Calls With Brick Walls” was released in 2006, but only in Asia. The Japan Covers were released exclusively to Asia in 2008, but c’mon they were J-Pop cover songs. A Wild Pear was a split 7″ for Canada in 2009, also covers. 2009 also saw another Japan only album this time from the Gundam franchise, more covers. 55 Cadillac was released in America but is not considered in the Party Rock style we usually associate AWK with, also the album was probably created more as a legal victory than anything else. We Got A Groove was a split 7″ on a Volcom label, it was perhaps the first exclusively released song (Party Rock-style) in America since The Wolf ! However it was only one track, on vinyl only and for a long time was only available by joining Volcom’s vinyl club… like $30.00?!?! A collaborated Single “Kiba” was released in 2010, to Japan only. “Vagabond” was technically released in the UK. The dual release of Close Calls With Brick Walls/Mother of Mankind was A) a re-release and B) a B-sides/Anthology type of album. I Was Born To Love You was just released as E-Single, a Japan-only cover song.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed every single one of these releases thoroughly but sometimes knowing about the added baggage associated with each release is sometimes cumbersome as a listener and as a fan. I sometimes wish I was naive to it all so I could enjoy it without the added weight. That said, to hope for a new studio album released in the artist’s native country (without cover songs, re-releases, splits or heavy collaborations) isn’t too wild of an idea is it?

Soooo… to me this release is EXCITING and seems different in many ways. It’s as if it has no bloated legal baggage and no strings attached it. It will be the first American EP released in 11 years (the two prior being “AWKGOJ” and “Party Til You Puke–both 2000). My prediction is that it will ushers in a new “era” of Andrew W.K. and a benchmark of what can be expected for the near future. GET READY TO PARTY 2011!!!

NOTE: This “Round #2″ was initially supposed to be much more comprehensive than the state it’s in right now. Due to an insane amount of activity and involvement Andrew participates in daily the amount of posts I’m able to sort through and archive is extremely time consuming! My “secret” is the use of the application “Google Reader” along with “Google Alerts”. Basically whenever certain terms like “Andrew W.K.” is posted somewhere online Google notifies me. These articles can build up into the thousands! Although this article consists of only 1/3 of the news that’s happened since December I figured if I didn’t post it now I would just keep getting further and further behind, so here it is.

HELP ME! The official AWK website does not post every bit of news. Although this task would be impossible to accomplish to its fullest, a worthy attempt is the technique I described above. However, time constraints won’t allow me to do it all by myself! So, using Google Readers “bundle” I can share these awk news “feeds” with you! Help me with “Around The World With AWK #3” and dig up the most recent AWK news with Google Reader’s “bundle” feature by sending me an email to dickalan@andrewwkmusic.com. You’ll be the first to get any news about AWK!

I was sad to hear this morning from an AWK insider that the release date for Andrew W.K.’s rarities CD has been pushed back to March 8th in UK/Europe and March 9th in the US. The original dates were for February 22nd in Europe and the 23rd in the U.S. Andrew confirmed this later today in a tweet. However, none of the sites that are currently selling his album have been updated yet, hopefully they don’t get the message. :)

In the mean-time you can listen to previews of the tracks at the Amazon store.

On Friday, I ordered four releases by Andrew W.K. simultaneously, breaking my former record of “Most Andrew W.K. Titles Ordered Simultaneously” which stood strong at three. And though I did just want to gloat about my new personal best, I realized I could do so while reminding everyone about these (mostly) upcoming Andrew W.K. releases!

The Journal of Popular Noise (released)

Issues 13-15 (ft. AWK):
AWK appeared on this spoken word zine last spring/summer, but it went under the radar. I’ll have my vinyl rips up for you when it arrives, but if you want to order, it was $18 with shipping to N. America.

Two discs & One disc

Kiba (Releases Jan. 27)

I’d be content to pay ~$24 for a super rare Andrew W.K. sticker, so receiving the Kiba single and bonus DVD content from Andrew & Marty will be a blast!

I’m A Vagabond (releases Feb. 14)

There are too many reasons to buy this one! Not only is it limited to 500 copies, but it will be on a square 7″! When I first saw the art for this single, I laughed, but when a friend mentioned that AWK was wearing colored contacts, I got real scared. I looked again, and it appears my friend was right. Why is Andrew wearing colored contacts? Why are these songs published on BSM records and not Steev Mike since two tracks will be on Mother of Mankind? This release looks to be a vital clue in the mystery of crediting Steev Mike on AWK releases.

Close Calls With Brick Walls/Mother of Mankind (Releases Feb. 23)

Available around the world from various retailers, but Amazon is now selling pre-orders for $16.99. I was lucky and snagged my pre-order for $14.99. I almost didn’t order this release because I’ve already purchased CCWBW twice (Japanese CD w/ DVD & American vinyl), but I wouldn’t have been able to break my AWK buying record without CCWBW/MoM. [Wait, maybe I should count my record at five instead of four due to the double release!?]

January is almost over and Kiba is almost here! Soonafter, “I’m a Vagabond” will be released, and before we know it, we’ll be able to have Close Calls With Brick Walls & Mother of Mankind blasting through our stereos. Prepare to party, pre-order what you want before its too late! And until then, party hard anyway!

Don’t ever stop the noise,
AmigoWK
